Oil Painting of Amethyst Geode by Rusty Harden

Amethyst Geode
Oil on Canvas
16' x 20"
Rusty Harden
Mineral owned by Matt Black

I don't usually paint minerals on canvas.  Because of the size, I thought I would give it a try.  (Hard board is still by favorite ground.)  Actually, I started this painting at the mineral show in Cincinnati but didn't get back to it until  this week.  I'm very pleased with it.  The  geode is close to 16" at the base and 17" high.  The painting of the geode is very close to those that size.  Well, its my mineral painting season.  I'll be coming up for air and food from time to time....

Thank you Matt Black for allowing me to work from your minerals.

Trillium Original Watercolor Painting Rusty Harden

Woodland wildflowers are beautiful but fleating.
If you aren't there at just the right time, they are gone
until next year.  I think that I am drawn to them for
that reason.  Its reminds me to enjoy the moment,
and to look for beauty  because it may be gone in
 the next moment.

As trillium mature (another way of saying get old) they turn pink.
The first week I observed these trillium they were all white.
A week later, while many more had bloomed, the older ones
were in their glory of pinkness.

Daffodils Original Watercolor Painting by Rusty Harden

"Beauty in Imperfection"
12" x 9"
Watercolor

April usually brings daffodils, an early sign of spring. I have attempted to paint them many times and have always failed. It is the translucent nature of the petals that is so hard to maintain while capturing the light and dark contrast.

I loved the one with the torn trumpet and the way it reveals what is on the inside of the flower. Its like people, sometimes you can’t know what is in them until they are wounded.

"Nightingale" Watercolor painting by Rusty Harden

Nightingale
8 x 10"
watercolor
"Nightingale"
Original  $95.00
Poets have long considered the nightingale as symbol of a poet.
Shelly wrote in his “A Defense of Poetry":

"A poet is a nightingale who sits in darkness and sings to cheer its own solitude with sweet sounds; his auditors are as men entranced by the melody of an unseen musician, who feel that they are moved and softened, yet know not whence or why.”

"Tender is the night" is a lyric in John Keats' "Ode to a Nightingale".

During the exhibit "Out of the Depths" March 4 - April 24
at Studio 14 in Tipp City, I will also be displaying
my series of paintings created in what I call my transpoured technique.
The transpoured technique is the process that goes beyond just pouring the selected colors onto the paper. I carefully plan composition and strong design elements and manipulate the color to either be repelled or drawn to enhance color intensity. Some paintings are enhanced by working with transparent colors creating subjects and mood.

"Convergence" Watercolor by Rusty Harden

When we dignify another person we elevate our own value to society.
"Convergence"
Fallen Series
Watercolor
Rusty Harden

I call this painting "Convergence"  because of the way the stalks have fallen over crossing and coming together.  The lovely precious lily reminds me of my friend, Dorothy.   I painted this in the spring of 2010
a few months after Dorothy and I were in a serious accident.  She was badly injured and as is often the
case, she will never be the same.  I find that she is as beautiful "fallen" as ever.  The crossing stalks represent the intersection where the accident occurred.

The "Fallen Series" is about meeting people where they are.

The pink flower, known by some as Magic Lillies or Naked Ladies, grow in my flower beds.  In the spring the greenery grows but the single stalk with the lillies wait until mid summer to make their appearance.
