"Rocks & Minerals" Magazine Featured in the March/April 2014 Issue

March/April 2014

In my last blog, I spoke of dreams coming true.  Well, being featured in the Rocks & Minerals  March/April 2014 Issue is beyond any dream that I could have imagined.

I want to thank Marie E. Hulzing, Editor-In-Chief; Susan Robinson, Contributing Writer; and Taylor & Francis Group for this exciting opportunity.

When the package holding the copies of the magazine was delivered at my door, I was surprised at how heavy 100 magazines were!  (Yes, I ordered 100. Family, friends, and collectors of my art work urged me to order plenty since there are no opportunities for getting more printed later)  Opening the box, lifting out the top magazine and opening the cover nearly made my head spin with anticipation.  I found page number 154,and could barely believe that page and two more were covered in my artwork of minerals.  Three, yes, three pages....unbelievable!!!

Save The Date:  Preview of my 2014 mineral paintings on April 18 at Studio 14 6:30 - 8:30

Thank you to so many folks who have encouraged me and are supportive of my artistic endeavors.

Thinking About Me, Rusty, Today

I spend the majority of the time thinking about, working on, chasing after some aspect of my “art business”. I appreciate and get a great deal of pleasure from my students, I think about them a lot.  (I’m leaving the links out here, this is about me)

While it is hard to separate me from the artist, which expands to the business, I think that sometimes I forget about, Rusty.  I appreciate that my artwork has given “voice” to the inner self that I probably couldn’t figure out how to express, otherwise.  Recently, I was sharing with some friends that there was a time that I really believed that I was a dumb person.  I chose to look at life with different glasses and one day....I knew I wasn’t dumb, at all.  I may not have known to know some things but that is not the true gauge, is it?

For my life as an artist but first as a person,  I am grateful for the other things I’ve learned by  looking through different glasses:

I  was born to have a voice.

Success and failure is part of the same journey, they don’t have to be different roads.

Some people and opportunities might not be “bad” but they may be “bad” for me.

I appreciate that I am able to contribute positive bits to other people’s live.

I appreciate that other people contribute positive bits to my life.

I am so grateful that there are artists, poets, and dreamers among us.  They fill me up with inspiration and wonderful reminders to not get closed in and bogged down.

Working hard is vital but just as vital is knowing which direction to work.  Its been a challenge and an adventure to figure that one out. (I’m always making adjustments here)

Dreams do come true but I have to remember that I didn’t get them alone

Art Challenge Gallery and CBS Sunday Morning Art Promotion

"Landscape"
Watercolor and Colored Pencils

Promotion of an art business is like water to growing a crop.  You can get it into the ground but we need water for the business to grow.  I don't feel like my blog is ever a how-to for other artists.  I do think having this blog is one of the ways that I water my art business.

I've been really happy with the work that I've done with Art Challenge Gallery.  We've just had a great video published on Vimeo  from the ACG challenge "Landscape".

"Cuppa Sun"

CBS Sunday Morning had a very touching story about a man who kindly buys coffee for folks during their medical treatment. At the end of the segment my Sun Art aired.  The original is sold but there are prints and notecards  available.  For purchasing email me at Rusty Harden

Thank you all for reading this week's blog.  And helping  me water my art business.

Quote Inspired Art Original Drawing Rusty Harden

 “What the Days…”
Pen and Ink
 NFS
 5′ x 7″

I have a series of work in pen called "Bibelot".  A definition for Bibelot is a small object of curiosity or beauty.  Another definition, a miniature book.

I think that describes my Bibelot  series.  The work is relatively small compared to my other work in watermedia or oil paintings.  Each is entirely an intuitive piece of artwork.  My subconscious allows me to express the  innermost latent mood in my soul.

This pen drawing "What the Days..."  was inspired by the quote "The years tell us what the days never knew".  I jotted the quote onto the page and just allowed myself to draw without plan.  The connected images surprised me as much as intrigued me.  Like  the image of  a child's toy perhaps put away in an attic is suspended from the top of a man in a vest's hat.; from his feet images in the heap on the floor.  I feel like the man in the vest represents the "years" connecting the days from the past to the sum of the years.

I have learned not to believe that this one day defines me or my experiences.  It does take years to see that there is a big picture that evolves as I add days to my life.  Years are made up of a lot of days....

To see the artwork of other artists who dared to create artwork inspired the quote of their choice Art Challenge Gallery

Sun Art 2013 "Sundrops" Original Watercolor by Rusty Harden

"SunDrops"
Watercolor
7" x 10"
Rusty Harden

This is my submission for the fourth annual Sun Art Challenge hosted by Art Challenge Gallery.  This painting  will be submitted along with the other sun art of the other artists to the CBS Sunday Morning Show.

Each of my submissions to ACG for the past three years have been aired on Sunday Morning a number of times.  I have high hopes that you will be seeing this one sometime this year.

(For one of my watercolor classes I taught how to paint waterdrops and reflections in waterdrops. That class inspired my “Sundrops” for this year’s Sun Art Challenge.)
